Camp staff members live, eat, play, dance, and sing while supervising campers throughout the summer. They mentor volunteer cabin counselors while performing the essential functions of camp as class instructors, lifeguards, kitchen staff, and more.

To be a staff member at VBYC, you must possess the following qualities: patience, playfulness, willingness to participate, compassion, great listening skills, and an appreciation for working with youth. Staff members have a profound impact on the campers and counselors they lead. It is a position that demands incredible responsibility and patience, and you’ll be on call 24/7. Major Duties and Responsibilities

Kitchen Staff:

  • Working with a close-knit team to provide nutritious and delicious meals for the camp community.
  • Adhering to safety standards by keeping the kitchen clean and Serv Safe.
  • Interacting with campers and leading activities outside of kitchen shifts.
  • Mentoring volunteer counselors by providing guidance and support.

Program Staff:

  • Working independently to create and deliver high quality activities for assigned program area.
  • Developing leadership skills through developing and leading full camp activities alongside coworkers.
  • Assisting in creating a cleanly and safe camp environment by leading clean-up efforts for assigned camp spaces alongside coworkers and campers.
  • Mentoring volunteer counselors by providing guidance and support.

Leadership Staff:

  • Taking initiative to complete job responsibilities independently with the support of the directors.
  • Embodying the core values of VBYC and leading by example for coworkers, volunteers, and campers.
  • Working with high-school aged volunteers to support their personal and leadership growth, and empowering them to be great camp counselors.
  • Other responsibilities as determined by the specifics of each role as outlined in staff handbook.
